Dark Night of The Scarecrow Coming to Blu-Ray

The greatest TV Movie ever Dark Night of The Scarecrow (1981) is already availible on DVD but we just learned that, incredibly, a 30th anniversary edition is coming to Blu-Ray. Writer of the teleplay J.D. Feigelson passed the following details onto Dread Central:

“It will have a lot of bonus material, most of which has never been seen. We are catering to the items which the fans have repeatedly asked for. The release street date is on or about October 4th, just in time for All Hallows.”

Dark Night inspired several scarecrow slashers like Jack-o and Night of the Scarecrow (both 1995). It offered genuine suspense and chills without even showing the burlap-sacked straw-man perpetrator until the final scene. I can only think of one other similar movie to give me the creeps, that was William Wesley’s Scarecrows (1988), also an atypical movie, combining the tense action of Aliens with elements from the slashers and zombie subgenres.

Slaughter High & The Funhouse Special Editions

Arrow Films have become Britain’s equivalent to Blue Underground, having released must-have special editions of many Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci movies, as well as such classics as Dawn of the Dead and Bay of Blood. Two of their latest titles announced are cult slashers that until now have received poor treatments on DVD and Blu-ray.

Slaughter High, produced in the UK in 1984 under the title April Fool’s Day, was previously released by Lionsgate with a poor selection of special features (an irrelevant trivia track), whilst Tobe Hooper’s underrated 1981 thriller The Funhouse, which was simultaneously adapted by acclaimed horror author Dean Koontz, received a vanilla release several years ago.

Blue Underground to Release Torso on Blu-ray

Along with Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and Mario Bava, Sergio Martino was one of the most successful Italian filmmakers working in the giallo genre during the 1970s. Among his most acclaimed work were La coda dello scorpione (The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail) and l tuo vizio è una stanza chiusa e solo io ne ho la chiave (Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key), yet perhaps his most overlooked was his 1973 thriller I corpi presentano tracce di violenza carnale (Carnal Violence). More commonly known under its alternative title Torso, the movie is one of Martino’s more explicit features, which included a significant amount of nudity. The film’s climax – in which heroine Suzy Kendall is chased around the house by a masked killer – could be considered an influence on the subsequent slasher cycle.

Coppola’s Dementia 13 Making Its Way to Blu-ray

Over the last couple of years there have been countless Roger Corman productions that have made their way to Blu-ray and now the latest to be upgraded is Francis Ford Coppola’s commercial debut Dementia 13. Having completed work on a picture entitled The Young Racers in Ireland, Corman discovered that he still had some of his budget remaining and so offered Coppola the chance to direct a quick thriller using actors and props from the production, a common method for Corman. Considered by some to be a prototype for the slasher cycle that would follow over a decade later, Dementia 13 slipped into obscurity for many years before being rediscovered on home video.

Troma’s Mother’s Day Coming To Blu-Ray

A remake may be out in a few weeks and an appendage-movie in Father’s Day later, but June 7 brings Mother’s Day (1980) home on blu-ray. Not typical Troma fare at all, but back then 80’s Troma wasn’t really Troma yet. I always found the flick somewhat atypical and unsafe. The opening scene pulls a real con on slasher tropes, and once the ladies are in over their head, story structure falls apart for a seemingly never-ending loop of degradation. Of course it’s all set-up for another reversal, this time comeuppance for the villains. It’ll be interesting to see how well this grungy movie scrubs up for BD – not too well I hope! Blue Underground Bring The Nesting To DVD/Blu-Ray

The terror that hides inside your mind will soon be the terror that hides in your media player. Armand Weston’s The Nesting (1980) is coming to DVD and BD from Blue Underground on June 28. This is quite the unexpected announcement as the title has long been associated with Code Red DVD as a future release and was still buried as a page on their website last we checked. But if any other company exercises due diligence in acquisitions, it’s Bill Lustig’s BU. Extras are thin, but in this case the most special feature is the film itself – we’ll be getting the previously unreleased Director’s Cut! Read on for the synopsis, cover art and disc details.
