Fangoria have claimed that Hostel director Eli Roth is currently in talks with Universal Pictures about helming their planned remake of Tobe Hooper’s underrated slasher The Funhouse. Set in a creepy amusement park after hours, his 1981 classic saw a group of friends witnessing the murder of one of the workers at the hands of the ‘freak’ (who hides his features behind a Frankenstein mask) and desperately try to find their way out as the deranged monster hunts them down.
During his interview with the magazine’s official site, the thirty-seven year old Cabin Fever director revealed details about his next planned feature. “It should be about the kids getting killed in horrible ways, put in different contraptions in the funhouse and the final girl being strapped into the ride and sent into the tunnels to be confronted by terrifying tableaux of her dead friends,” says Roth, who recently completed a role in Quentin Tarantino’s latest, Inglourios Basterds. “A smart remake could be so much fun. Kill the kids in fabulous ways and continually reuse the bodies by making them freaks in the freak museum, sew their eyes shut, waxworks… That’s the stuff I want to do in a remake of The Funhouse.”
For me, Hostel was a welcome change from the ‘safe’ horror that had been populating the genre for the first half of the decade and Roth truly understands and loves the genre, so if there’s anyone I want to see remake a slasher it’s him. Fingers crossed that this project doesn’t go south like his adaptation of Stephen King’s Cell seems to have.
